WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS WEEK OF FEBRUARY 18-19

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

NEW ACCESS POLICY Because of our urban location and some scary incidents of late, starting on Thursday, February 23rd, the exterior doors will lock at 5:45 PM each weekday.  If no one in your group, team, or ministry has a key card to let the other members in for scheduled gatherings, please contact Susan  the first of the week to obtain one.  (For choir practice, the courtyard doors will be unlocked from 6:45 to 7:45.  Later?  Call Charles’s cell.)

ASF FORUM: This Sunday at 9:00 a.m. the Adult Spiritual Formation ministry hosts our series on Christian history and theology, based on Diarmaid MacColloch’s award winning book “Christianity – The First Three thousand Years”.  We meet in the media room (Room 204) at the parish. Come join us in exploring the development of our Christian history and theology over the centuries. (Reading the book certainly helps, but is not necessary to participation. Each Sunday we summarize an era in Christian history, before leading lively discussion on the topics covered, and their significance to current times). This Sunday, February 19th, we will learn about the Byzantine era of 900 CE – 1700 C.E. in Chapter 14: “Orthodoxy – More Than an Empire” covering the crusades, Ottoman conquests and the fall of Byzantium. Next Sunday we’ll cover the developments in Chapter 15: “Russia – The Third Rome”, including the establishment of Christianity in Russia, and the development of the Russian Orthodox church and theology.  All are welcome; please join us in learning about our faith together; and share your insight and thoughts!

Wednesdays of Lent
Have you ever wondered how the Bible relates to what is happening today? Come and join us for a new Lenten discussion series, Seeking Justice in Today’s World: The Prophets Speak. This series will take us on a wild ride through the poetic prophecy of the Hebrew scriptures, drawing connections between Israel’s sociological, economic, and spiritual status and that of America today.

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays during Lent, beginning on February 29th and continuing through Wednesday, April 4th, during Holy Week. All sessions will begin with a simple soup supper at 6:00 PM followed by a brief DVD presentation and table discussion. Please sign up in the Parish Hall to bring soup or bread, but feel free to join us even if you are unable to bring food. Everyone is welcome.

40 Steps of Lent for Health, Wellness & Beyond

Please plan to join us for 40 Steps of Lent for Health, Wellness & Beyond, a Lenten offering to benefit healthy living by parishioners. Ministry Opportunities

Acolyte Vestments   Some very generous donations (THANKS to all who gave!) have covered nearly all the cost of new acolyte cassocks and surplices, but there’s still a few hundred dollars that could readily be used to this purpose,  We hope to have the bright new vestments for Easter.  (Hint: think of the doors.)    Is that something you’d like to fund?

Have you “done” coffee hour lately?  It’s not hard — even fun! — and you can be reimbursed up to $50 for expenses incurred.  Or if you prefer, turn in your receipts to get credit for a donation in kind.  This is a fellowship we all enjoy, and the hosting is a ministry to your fellow parishioners.  Sign up on the poster in the Parish Hall.

The food pantry needs grocery bags and egg cartons.  Please bring some in.  Thank you!

You Can Help St. Paul’s Preschool Earn money for our school every time you use your Fresh Values card at Smith’s!  To enroll, simply present your Smith’s Earn & Learn letter (located on the St. Paul’s Preschool bulletin board in the Parish Hall) to your cashier during your next visit to Smith’s. Your cashier will scan the barcode on the letter to link the school to your card. Then use your Fresh Values card every time you shop to help earn money for your school!  To sign up or learn more about Smith’s Earn & Learn, visit Smith’s website at: www.SmithsFoodAndDrug.com <file://www.SmithsFoodAndDrug.com>  or call Rhonda at 801-521-6419.

We’ve also started another fundraiser at St. Paul’s Preschool, and it’s very easy to help out!  We’ve joined he Drink Pouch Brigade® run by TerraCycle®. Just save any Caprisun® and Honestkids® drink pouches that you might use at home and bring them to church with you on Sunday. We’re also saving the pouches that the children have in their lunches. More info can be found on the Preschool bulletin board in the Parish Hall.  Thank you very much for your participation!

Hello everyone, I want to thank everyone that donated items for the Women Of the World's clients last year.  The women were very appreciative for the great things that they received.  Since I moved here a three years ago, I have been overwhelmed by the charity of the people of Utah; of all of the places I have lived in the world, I believe it to be the most caring and charitable.  This time I did not think I could be further surprised by the charitable support of the community, but this holiday season I was proven wrong.  I kept going back to my garage, picking out new and like-new donations and carrying them to families in need, all thanks to this group's benevolence. There are not words for the gratefulness felt by women who received your gifts, oftentimes the first new thing they have received in America; I cannot convey the pride I felt in each of you for giving so graciously for a woman who has struggled and suffered so much.

Odds & Ends

Altar flowers are a lovely way to commemorate a departed love one or to celebrate one or more of life’s blessings.  Though we won’t have flowers during Lent, you can find flower dedication slips on the northmost bulletin board in the Parish Hall or at the back of the Church or on the little table outside Grace Chapel.

FOUND: Gloves, mittens, earrings, reading glasses, a book, a notebook, a hoodie, etc.  Check with Susan in the office if any might be yours.

The Preschool has openings for two-year-olds; is there someone you could refer?  Have them call Rhonda at 801-521-6419; she'll be glad to give them a tour.
