SOCIAL JUSTICE
Social Justice is the point in our lives where our Christian ethics intersect with the world around us. Lobbying, letter writing, and other actions designed to influence the legislative process. In the past, St. Paul’s has been associated with the Coalition of Religious Communities (CoRC) which was instrumental in lowering the sales tax on food. This is an example of legislative action. We will look at re-energizing our relationship with CoRC (http://www.crossroads-u-c.org/CORC.htm). Migrant rights were mentioned as a possible area of interest. Adult forum could be a venue for presenting information to the parish.
OUTREACH
Outreach is responding faithfully, in the name of Jesus, to the physical and emotional needs of people outside our parish community.
Outreach is, by far, the largest component of this team. St. Paul’s has a long history and a deep commitment to responding to the needs of the surrounding community, including:
Emergency Food Pantry (open Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m,) - located on our property next to the small parking lot by the North Doors.
St. Paul’s Preschool - a warm, safe learning environment for the children of working parents; whenever possible, scholarships are offered to low-income parents.
Family Promise (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network) - an interdenominational ministry dedicated to resettling homeless families.
Sandwich Making/Serving - for over 20 years, the parish has made, and served, sandwiches for the Salvation Army.
The Knitting Group - makes and gives away a variety of items, especially scarves and hats during colder weather.
Clothing Bins for Crossroads Urban Center - a collection point for gently-used, clean clothes.
A wide variety of other ministries are onging as well that fall under the category of "Facilities Outreach" These are ministries not directly run by St. Paul's but for which the parish provides meeting space, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA and related), Lumen (Episcopal/Lutheran campus ministry), Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R), Coalition of Religious Communities (CoRC), parish concerts (HIV/AIDS; Cancer)
Fundraising (activities that are not in and of themselves "outreach" but which provide funds for our outreach ministries): British Car Rally, Gift Shop, Rummage Sale. Note: We need to determine how these fundraising events determine which ministries benefit from the financial contributions.
Outreach activities on behalf of the National Church include our participation in the United Thank Offering (UTO), Episcopal Relief & Development(ERD).
