St. Paul’s Outreach Ministry

St. Paul’s has always supported our neighbors, near and far, in various ways. In January 2025 these efforts were consolidated into a more organized ministry. In January and February, we provided five dinners for the 2nd and 2nd Coalition, which provides emergency shelters for unhoused adults over very cold nights at First United Methodist Church and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The work entails planning, purchasing, preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up for over 200 meals each night, with only one to three days’ notice. Because it has to be done with little notice, we need a large pool of volunteers at the ready to get the 10-15 people needed each night. We are now looking for other ways to help our neighbors, particularly at The INN Between (see below) and for the local unhoused community in general.

The INN Between

The Inn Between has a mission to end the tragedy of vulnerable people dying on the streets of our community by providing medical respite and end-of-life care to those experiencing homelessness. As the only medical respite and end-of-life care facility for people experiencing homelessness in the greater Salt Lake area, The INN Between plays an important role in our community. They could not do this work alone, and they rely on our collaborative relationships with other homeless service agencies to ensure that vulnerable individuals are safely and appropriately placed.

St. Paul’s Health Ministry

St. Paul’s health ministry consists of a group of health care professionals that sponsor activities geared towards improving the health of the parish.  Current activities include holding an annual Flu and COVID shot clinic in the fall and Red Cross Blood Drives twice a year, about every 6 months. Each blood drive sees 30-35 donors and collects about 30 units of blood. St. Paul's provides the Parish Hall for this event.  Past activities have included monthly blood pressure screenings, and health fairs, as well as providing brochures on a variety of topics including blood pressure, stroke prevention, cancer screening and advance directives.

Knitting and Beyond

Knitting and Beyond has been “knitting for others with others” for over a decade.  We meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:00 pm at various members’ homes and create items we donate locally, nationally, and internationally.  We’ve made blankets for the Linus Project, winter scarves for the Red Scarf Project, prosthetics for Knitted Knockers, and teddy bears for The Mother Bear Project.  Last year we donated over 100 hats and scarves to our own St. Paul’s Food Pantry who distributed them in our local community at Christmas time.   We can provide yarn, needles, hooks, patterns, and friendly guidance for those who need a little help getting started.  If you are an experienced knitter or crocheter, or if you have maybe once heard of yarn, we invite you to join us for evenings of productive creativity and a few laughs.

St. Paul’s Stewardship Committee

The Stewardship Committee helps the members of St. Paul’s discern their calling to serve the church and the world in God’s name. Stewardship is more than fundraising: it is the way we respond to God’s call to interact with the world, both as individuals and as communities of faith. Our participation in and commitment to our faith community – in the form of pledging, serving on the vestry or in the Pantry, being a Godly Play teacher or choir member – is all stewardship. The idea of stewardship as a way of life rather than only a season of fundraising can be joyously transformative, by helping members of the Parish find their calling.

St. Paul’s Dinner Club

The Club meets eight times a year in our homes, in small groups of about eight people. Each couple or individual provides a main dish, appetizer, side dish, or dessert, and the groups are different each month, so that we get to see a variety of people. We also hold an annual potluck in the Parish Hall where all the members of the club gather together. This ministry has been a wonderful way for us to get to know each other better and enjoy good food and fellowship.

St. Paul's Oldest Book Club

St. Paul’s Oldest Book Club has been meeting monthly for 18 years and under the leadership Ray Wilmot. They meet monthly and on Saturday nights. Their interests are in good conversation around various forms of literature. They meet in the homes of their members and light snacks are provided. The books they read are classics, contemporary fiction, and non-fiction. Members of the book club select the readings and their interests are diverse. You are encouraged to come and read.

Wednesday Monthly Book Club

The Wednesday Monthly Book Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at St. Paul’s to discuss the book and the third Wednesday at Oasis Restaurant for fellowship and book chatter as well. We meet at 10 a.m. both days. We alternate a fiction and then non-fiction book every other month. Members submit possible choices and the group votes. New members are always welcome.

St. Paul’s Lay Weeders

Lay Weeders are volunteers who take care of the gardens at St. Paul’s (the lawns are mowed by a hired landscaping company). We are fortunate to have a mature landscape that doesn’t require much actual weeding, but we do a lot of pruning, trimming, and cleanup under the supervision of a landscape architect. Spring and fall are the busiest times, but there is work to do throughout the summer too; the exact schedule varies with the seasons and the availability of our volunteers.
